STANWOOD — Stanwood High School’s science team took first place Saturday at the state Science Olympiad tournament at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
Now the team will represent Washington state at the national Science Olympiad high school tournament in May at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne.
The science team includes the school’s award-winning Hi-Q squad, and all are students in Kathryn Redfern’s advanced placement calculus-based physics class.
“This is an incredible group of kids,” said Redfern, who is coach of the Hi-Q team and an assistant coach of the Science Team. “The colleges these students have been accepted to include Cornell, Duke, Brown, Williams and the University of Washington.”
Science team head coach Susan Britain also is assisted by Robin Ringland and Mike Crosbie
Some of the team members participated in the national Science Olympiad when they were seventh graders, and many of their parents have been involved as volunteers since then, Redfern said.
The Stanwood science team won first place at a regional competition in Seattle before moving on to the state Science Olympiad tournament. There they faced 19 other teams from around the state.
“The competitive level at this tournament was very high. The students’ projects are extremely technical,” Redfern said. “The students have been preparing since October and have done an amazing job.”
Students on the Stanwood science team include Max Osnes, Harley Weaver, Heather Biehl, Rebecca Raible, John “Alec” Parker, Kyle Blackburn, Peter Holmes, David Zietz, Mark Zietz, April Thayer, Jimmy Besancon and Derek Britain.
