Whatever you might call them, studded tires are allowed starting Wednesday.
State law allows drivers to use studded tires from Nov. 1 to March 31 each year, though transportation workers encourage drivers to explore stud-free traction tires and other alternatives, citing road damage. Since last year, each new studded tire now carries a $5 fee.
