ARLINGTON — Arlington police announced today they have identified the man they believe responsible for stealing a minivan with two children inside last month.
The man, whose name was not released, has been in the Snohomish County Jail on unrelated charges, Arlington Police Chief John Gray said.
The man recently was arrested by another police department for investigation of burglary. He also was wanted by the state Department of Corrections for violating conditions of his release from a previous conviction, and has a long criminal history, Gray said.
Arlington investigators will recommend today that the man be charged with three counts of kidnapping and one count of first-degree theft for the Oct. 18 carjacking, Gray said.
Police believe the man drove off with two children, 2 and 4, after he threatened their mother with a knife and carjacked her minivan outside a Marysville shopping center. The children were found about eight hours later inside the minivan. They were not hurt.
