EVERETT — A homeless man claims he was acting in self-defense Tuesday when he stabbed his friend outside a south Everett gas station.
The man, 28, and the victim used to work together as roofers in Louisiana, according to the arrest report filed by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. Late Tuesday morning, the two men were among a group of people standing outside The Home Depot on Highway 99, where contractors sometimes pick up workers.
They reportedly got into an argument about money and beer. After the stabbing, the suspect initially ran away but turned himself in a short time later.
He told detectives that the victim had martial arts experience and took a fighting stance. He said he was scared for his safety, causing him to draw the knife.
He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree assault.
The friend, who was stabbed in the abdomen, was listed in satisfactory condition Wednesday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
