Police in Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties plan to have extra patrols on the road as the 27th annual Oyster Run kicks off Sunday in Anacortes.
The Oyster Run is a popular motorcycle event drawing thousands of riders from around the region.
Washington State Patrol troopers will be watching for drivers who speed, drive aggressively or get on their bikes after drinking alcohol, trooper Keith Leary said.
Riders are reminded to be properly trained, to ride with their headlights on and to wear bright clothing and proper safety equipment, including a helmet, Leary said.
Police can impound bikes if the driver isn’t properly licensed to drive a motorcycle.
Last year, an Everett man died when his motorcycle crashed in rural Skagit County.
Brian Dean Schmidt, 47, was driving on Farm-to-Market Road just south of Allen West Road when police believe his motorcycle went into a ditch, struck a culvert and then was thrown into a post.
The majority of fatal motorcycle accidents are a result of the driver losing control, Leary said.
