BAKER CITY, Ore. — Two members of the Baker School District board say people with concealed handgun permits should be able to carry firearms on school property.
The Baker City Herald reports that they’re objecting to a proposal to make the district’s properties weapons-free zones.
Dis
trict officials say they realized it didn’t have a policy last year after an angry parent came to a school with a knife strapped to his leg.
Police told school staff members the man wasn’t brandishing the weapon or threatening anyone, nor was he violating any district policy. So the police took no action.
In a Southern Oregon case, the Court of Appeals has upheld a Medford schools rule forbidding employees to carry firearms.
