Sinkhole near Skykomish temporarily clogs traffic on US 2

As the Memorial Day weekend exodus began, transportation crews filled the whole with cement.

SKYKOMISH — Heading into the Memorial Day weekend, traffic on U.S. 2 was alternating through one lane Friday near Milepost 53, prompting backups. Crews had discovered a sinkhole beneath the westbound lane, prompting emergency repairs.

Crews filled the hole with cement and both lanes were open to traffic at 1:05 p.m. Friday. Congestion was still expected — but only for the usual holiday travel reasons.
