Walter Selden of Everett asked me the other day if any decision had been made about parking the SBX on Everett’s waterfront.
The Sea-Based X-Band Radar, if you don’t know, is a $900 million platform designed to track incoming ballisitic missiles. Remember Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars? The Navy and the Missile Defense Agency are talking about temporarily bringing it to Naval Station Everett for repairs.
They wanted to keep it here permanently a few years ago and that did not go over well with Everett locals.
No decision has been made yet. I dropped a note to the base’s PIO Kristin Ching. Here’s what she told me:
“At this time there are no major events to report. We are still going through the Environmental Assessment process with the other locations as alternatives. The EA must be completed before any decision is made about where to bring the vessel for maintenance.”
She also said that assessment should be available on the SBX’s website whenever they get finished: here.
