EVERETT – The age of steam has returned, if only for this week.
Steam locomotive No. 4449 and its 12 passenger cars passed through the city Tuesday, and will return today, Thursday and this weekend.
The vintage train is touring the Northwest and giving rides to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway employees. The refurbished cars were built between 1949 and 1964.
The train is taking only employees as an appreciation event, but the public can look for it from several vantage points, such as the train depot at 2900 Bond St., as it passes by on the rails.
The train’s schedule for today is to leave Seattle at 12:30 p.m. and arrive in the northeast Everett train yard at 1:30 p.m. Then it will head back to Seattle at 2:15 p.m.
Another trip is planned for Thursday, leaving Seattle at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Everett at 9:30 a.m. and then heading north to Bellingham at 10:15 a.m.
Prime viewing spots as the steam-belching train travels between Seattle and Everett include Mukilteo State Park in Mukilteo and Howarth Park in Everett.
The train returns to Everett at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. It will stay overnight before leaving at 9 a.m. Sunday to head over Stevens Pass. It is scheduled to arrive in Skykomish at about 10:30 a.m. and stop for a half-hour until departure at 11 a.m. for Wenatchee.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas said the train’s schedule might change.
