STANWOOD – Police believe an Everett teen was shot in his sleep while he was visiting his girlfriend at her Stanwood home on Monday, according to court papers filed today.
Nick DeSimone, 19, died from a single gunshot wound to the head, Snohomish County homicide detectives said in an affidavit filed in Everett District Court.
Sheriff’s detectives on Tuesday arrested an 18-year-old Everett-area man in connection with DeSimone’s death. He’s expected to make a court appearance today.
The suspect had formerly dated DeSimone’s girlfriend and was angry about her new relationship, according to court papers. Police suspect the man slipped into the young woman’s home and shot DeSimone as he slept near her on the floor with her in front of the television.
The young woman said she was briefly roused from slumber by a loud noise and the smell of smoke, but she saw nothing amiss.
Others in the home were not awakened by the gunshot, according to police. The girlfriend’s father discovered DeSimone’s injury when he attempted to awaken him the next morning, the affidavit said.
A neighbor noted a suspicious car near the killing scene and provided police with a description.
That led to the murder suspect’s arrest, according to court papers.
DeSimone was a standout soccer player at Mariner High School and Edmonds Community College.
