SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Ed Murray says Seattle police have increased security at Seattle Pride events this month following the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Florida.
Murray said in a statement Sunday he is grieving the loss of so many members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community in Orlando. The mayor, who is gay, says that “for too long, our community has been the target of violence throughout the world.”
He and other leaders were remembering those who were killed in the attack. Gov. Jay Inslee in a statement called it a “horrific tragedy” and “an act of hatred.”
Seattle Pride’s vice president David Hale says organizers plan to move forward with the Seattle Pride Parade and other events but he says the attack will likely change the tone of events. He also says they’ll work with Seattle police on this year’s security plans.
A vigil was scheduled in Seattle Sunday night.
