WENATCHEE — A Wenatchee woman who died last August at the age of 92 left $1.1 million to the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society to help build a new no-kill pet shelter.
The society says the shelter likely will be named after the benefactor, Helen Zilke.
The Wenatchee World reports Zilke worked for 35 years as a produce buyer. Her husband, Daniel, who died in 1993, worked for a railroad and later Chelan County.
Relatives say the family lived a simple but comfortable life and always had pets, mainly cats, but sometimes dogs.
Zilke’s gift is nearly equal to the current shelter’s annual budget of $1.2 million.
