SEATTLE — The Washington state ferry system said riders can expect another change in fares on Oct. 11. That’s when the peak season surcharge ends and a 2.5 percent overall increase takes effect. The fare on a central Puget Sound ferry will be $6.90 for a passenger and $11.85 for a car and driver.
Jenny Durkan confirmed as U.S. attorney in Seattle
The U.S. Senate has voted to confirm Jenny Durkan, a longtime friend and counselor of Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire, to be U.S. attorney in Seattle.
President Barack Obama nominated Durkan in May and the Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed her last Thursday, sending her nomination to the full Senate, which confirmed her unanimously.
Homeless sleep outside Seattle mayor’s home
A couple of dozen people who camped outside the home of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels Monday night said they would sleep outside the home of City Councilman Tim Burgess on Tuesday night.
The demonstration is organized by the group SHARE, which is demanding that the city provide $50,000 more in free bus tickets for the homeless.
Olympia: Alexander to step down as state chief justice
Washington state Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerry Alexander announced Tuesday he will step down next year from his post and serve out the remainder of his term as an associate justice.
Alexander, the state’s longest-serving chief justice, is set to retire at the end of 2011, the year in which he will reach the mandatory retirement age of 75 for judges in Washington. Alexander will remain a justice on the nine-member high court for the last two years of his term.
Glacier: Snow closes end of Mount Baker Highway
Snow has closed the road to Artist Point, which is at the end of the Mount Baker Highway at an elevation of 5,100 feet. The Transportation Department said 4 inches of snow has fallen and more is expected this week. The section had been cleared of last winter’s snow on July 14.
