Gary Kelly, of Mukilteo, writes: “I have a question about speed limits that I can not find the answer to in the Washington State Drivers Guide. I even asked a former State Patrol agent who did not know the answer. I suppose one could use common sense but I still want to know.
“Does the speed limit start at the sign or when you see the sign? For example, (you’re driving) 45 mph and then you see several hundred feet ahead of you a sign where the speed limit goes to 60 mph. Do you start accelerating to reach the new speed limit when you get to the sign, or do you start accelerating past the sign?”
Washington State Patrol Sgt. Mark Francis responds: “Speed limits start and end at the signs. I would start accelerating after the increased speed zone sign and start decelerating before the decreased speed zone sign.”
