TACOMA — Wire thieves have disabled the lift span on the Murray Morgan Bridge in Tacoma.
The city said thieves broke into the mechanical room and took wiring from the control panel used to raise the bridge for ship traffic on the Foss Waterway.
The estimated cost of replacing the equipment is more than $250,000. Meanwhile, the city is looking for an interim method of operating the span. It typically opens two or three times a month in the winter and 10 or 12 times a month in the summer boating season.
The Murray Morgan bridge between downtown Tacoma and the Tideflats is nearly a century old. The state closed it in 2007 to vehicle traffic.
The city recently hired a contractor to start rehabilitation.
