Thousands of government loyalists massed outside the Abidjan home of Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo Monday, facing off against French armored vehicles in response to urgent appeals for a “human shield” around the hard-line leader, amid fears of an overthrow. French and Ivory Coast military leaders, appearing together on state television, appealed for calm following three days of violent protests the Red Cross said had wounded more than 500 people.
Taiwan: Strong quake hits island
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan late Monday night, shaking buildings in the capital, Taipei, for several seconds. No injuries or serious damage was immediately reported. The epicenter was in the Pacific ocean, 60 miles from the east coast city of Hualien, the weather service said.
Cuba: Hearing for bin Laden driver
A U.S. federal court ruled Monday that Osama bin Laden’s driver, Salim Ahmed Hamdan, 34, of Yemen was entitled to a legal hearing on whether he is a prisoner of war, a landmark opinion that could prevent military trials of alleged enemy combatants held at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. The U.S. government said it would immediately seek a stay of that ruling and file an appeal.
