BELLINGHAM — Starting in April, bottled water will no longer be sold at Western Washington University.
The decision was made after a student led campaign to increase sustainability at the campus, which is known for its environmental focus.
A member of Students for Sustainable Water at Western said bottled water and water privatization is detrimental to the environment and to human rights to water.
Carolyn Bowie says the decision is related to both the environment and social justice.
Students started the campaign in spring 2012. After a student advisory vote on the issue, a committee of students, faculty and staff was formed to implement the policy.
This is latest in a series of student-led environmental efforts at Western. Earlier, students started the campus recycling program and initiated a student fee for buying renewable energy.
