Bottoms up

Initiatives down: After Wednesday’s statewide count of ballots, it appears that both initiatives that sought to close state liquor stores in favor of sales in grocery, convenience and warehouse stores will fail.

Frankly, watching all those I-1100 and I-1105 ads has left us a little parched, so allow us to mix up a pitcher of State Monopoly Gimlets: Take equal parts conflicting initiatives, muddle with millions in corporate donations, add a dash of Mrs. Winifred T-Totalers’ Bitters, shake, pour into a highball glass and serve on a coaster made from a Costco coupon book.

Trees with nuts: A study by the U.S. Forest Service says that neighborhoods with large trees have less crime that neighborhoods with smaller trees.

While crime was lower, the study also noted that big trees had a higher number of Earth Liberation Front activists camped out in them.

Can’t blame Chad this time: The winner of the U.S. Senate race in Alaska won’t be known now until more than 80,000 write-in ballots are tallied and determined as votes for current Sen. Lisa Murkowski, I-Spell Check.

One complication: an unknown number of ballots with Bristol Palin as a write-in from those who thought they were voting for “Dancing with the Stars.”
