For three weeks, I have had the following on my mind. In light of the events in Charlottesville, Virginia earlier this month, I now feel compelled to write.
We are fooling ourselves if we think that of acts racism and bigotry are absent here. It comes in the most innocuous of settings. Three weeks ago, I attended a Sunday matinee performance of the musical, “Dream Girls,” by the Village Theater at the Everett Performing Arts Center. At intermission, one of two women there together said in a loud voice to the other: “This is too black for me.” Then she announced her intention to leave. Apparently, traveling together meant that the friend had no choice but to leave as well.
I have no further words for the incident.
