It is extremely interesting Herald columnist Jerry Cornfield is comfortable writing “This isn’t to predict the peppery 75-year old will be victorious in November — and if history is an indication, he (Gary Watts) won’t.” (“This guy is aiming to go from Tweakerville to City Hall,” The Herald, Sept. 13.)
Um, Donald Trump wasn’t supposed to win the presidency of the United States either, much less make it through the primaries. Dare I remind you of the write-in campaign for Linda Smith’s congressional seat as well? I’m not ready to say Watts will win the election for Everett mayor but there is no way I can’t say it cannot be done.
I am one of those Everett citizens easily changing my support to his write-in campaign for Everett mayor. I live in the south Everett area and maybe our local “occupational panhandlers” might try a new line of work. If Watts succeeds maybe our local businesses can lower the amount of expenses on planned losses of dollars due to theft of merchandise mostly used to finance drug habits. I certainly would enjoy taking my children to the park more often if I didn’t see so many syringes laying around. Need I say it makes me nervous to ride my bike to the park with my children down Casino Road?
Quite simply, politics and politicians have already brought us to this point. If Watts wins the election for mayor, can it really get worse?
Oh, and one more thing: Can you imagine if The Herald would be responsible for Watts winning the election just because it printed an article about the write-in campaign. I thought the “power of the press” was an expression of the past!
