County Republican Party Chair Doug Roulstone’s May 25 letter to the editor on the Democratic party’s past is very interesting from a historical standpoint, yet I don’t quite see how it relates to today.
While his assertions are correct, he failed to include the major party shift after Lyndon Johnson, a Democrat, signed the 1964 Civil Right Act mentioned and also correctly prophesied and I paraphrase; “With this, we’ve lost the South,” as they did in fact change to the Republican Party where they’re still firmly entrenched today. The reason was no mystery, so what’s his point?
While a study of the past is certainly important, it’s even more so we learn from it to not repeat that which we acknowledge was and is wrong. On subject, don’t tell us what you did yesterday, tell us what you’re doing today, for tomorrow.
