Letter writer Benita Helseth (“Al Gore: GOP’s tax criticism is funny,” Sept. 19) and others apparently missed classes in Economics 101.
Tax increases stifle economic activity. Tax cuts and balanced budgets drive economic activity. It was the Republican-controlled Congress that forced the Clinton administration to accept balanced budgets and today’s economy is the result.
Mr. Gore’s most popular phrase in the last debate was, “I want to give you.” A politician cannot give anything, unless he first takes it away. Yes, Mr. Gore raised taxes before and if he wins he will raise them again.
