It’s all happening at the zoo

There’s an ape for that: The National Zoo in Washington, D.C., has given Apple iPads to its orangutans, who scroll, swipe and tap through piano and drum apps and one that recreates a koi pond. Apps for Apes hopes to raise awareness and money for orangutan conservation efforts.

But zookeepers have to carefully monitor the apes’ iPad use. While her simian companions created a distraction, one orangutan switched to a financial app, hacked into a bank account and transferred $10 million to the Jane Goodall Institute.

Have correct nuts ready: Longview’s newest bridge is a 12-foot aluminum span that connects trees along a city boulevard and allows squirrels to cross the street high above the traffic. It’s actually the third such squirrel bridge in the southwest Washington city.

Seizing on the opportunity, Washington state transportation officials have scheduled a public meeting to discuss tolling on the squirrel bridges.

Keep clam: Staff at the College of Eastern Utah’s Prehistoric Museum in Price have freed a 4-foot-wide fossil of an ancient clam from sandstone cliffs.

Archeologists knew there were getting close to unveiling the huge gastropod when they discovered an 8-foot fossilized tub of tartar sauce.
