I really enjoyed Tuesday’s letter detailing the contributions of what could be called “democratic socialism” to our American way of life (“Our democratic socialism at work every day.”) Human nature is a mixed bag. We are capable of amazing acts of generosity and compassion, as well as behaviors that are hateful and destructive. A good society takes the best aspects of our human nature and builds them into the system. If we really want to maximize freedom, we can’t make the well-being of some dependent on the whims of others. Democratic socialism is simply the acknowledgement that we truly are better together.
