In November, voters in Snohomish will be asked whether they want a “strong” or a “weak” mayor. The choice should be easy to make; in fact, many people are calling it a “no brainer.” Marysville and Monroe both have strong mayors which has impacted the way the cities have developed along their central corridors. In contrast, Snohomish’s weak mayor form of government has resulted in less random and unsightly development. The reason Snohomish has been able to preserve its charming, small town feeling, is because its weak mayor-model invests more power in the city council than in any one politician. That’s the winning strategy that’s made Snohomish the most desirable place to live anywhere north of Seattle. That’s why I think that voting in favor of a weak mayor should be a no brainer.
