Regarding the letter, “West needs history lesson”: I agree that saber rattling and posturing are not conducive to long-term resolution of any conflict. I would like to suggest that perhaps Ukrainians might have a different memory of their relationship with Russia.
The starvation of millions of Ukrainians in the early 1930s was at least partly (if not primarily) caused by Russia. There is a plaque in Kiev’s St. Michael’s Square explaining what most Ukrainians call the Holodormor (“Extermination by hunger”).
In addition, Russian “settled” hundreds thousands of “ethnic Russians” into eastern Ukraine in order to exert more control of the agricultural bounty of Ukraine. The poor quality of the Russian soil has been a major driver for Russian international relations for centuries.
A study of history is always good. I prefer a study of history to understand the complexity of why events happen rather than a study of history to support a single point of view.
