Sound of music

Helping your children discover music over the summer break need not involve chauffeuring them to costly lessons, experts say. Simply singing folk songs around the campfire can inspire kids to learn to love music.

Warning: Possible side effects of musical enrichment may include endless choruses, at the tops of their lungs, of “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.”

Berry tardy: Thanks to cool, wet weather, the local strawberry crop is running about three weeks behind schedule this year, farmers say.

The situation is so dire that organizers of the Marysville Strawberry Festival had to import out-of-state berries this year. However, they resisted the temptation to rename the event the “Modesto Strawberry Festival.”

Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe: The archives of the Library of Congress now include a rare artifact: a 120-year-old map supporting the theory that the Earth is flat.

The library plans to display the map alongside a suitable companion piece: a copy of President Barack Obama’s Kenyan birth certificate.
