After reading the article about Snohomish County Parks Department using Roundup spray at Willis Tucker Park, I totally agree with resident Norm Hagen’s concern, especially after the staff said they didn’t spray the park (“Spraying in Willis Tucker Park resurfaces debate over herbicides,” The Herald, Sept. 21).
Since the head of the department decided differently, why didn’t they go online and research for something safe? Why use a product shown to cause cancer? Why not use vinegar?
Our family has been living on seven acres of creek-front property for 40 years with horses, pets and gardens. We also had blackberries, poison hemlock and o0ther noxious weeds. I have used vinegar as my only spray and it works as well and lasts as long as the other products. It doen’t harm the pollinators, wildlife, livestock, pets or people.
Vinegar is cheaper to use than Roundup. The crew won’t have to wear “hazmat” suits or micromanage the dosage.
By the way, moss is a natural antibacterial and relieves allergy reactions. My granddaughter had a reaction after petting a horse. A nearby mossy tree was the perfect sponge to wipe her hands on and under her nose. She cleared right up.
Mother Nature took care of our ancestors. Maybe we need to pay more attention to using what we’ve been given.
