DARRINGTON — Thanks to senior Cody Bryson, Darrington wrestling locked up a victory over rival Concrete Monday.
Bryson’s pin at 135-pounds in the last match of the evening sealed a narrow 45-36 Northwest 1A/2B/1B win, and Darrington, ranked No. 6 in the state by Washington Wrestling Report, avenged an earlier loss to No. 5 Concrete.
Senior Rich Groh of Darrington also turned in a key victory at 160 pounds, taking a 9-6 decision.
“We’re excited for the postseason,” Darrington head coach Chad Monteith said. “… We’re just really close, every time we (wrestle).”
Concrete defeated Darrington 42-30 earlier in the season. In that meet, Darrington’s 215-pound wrestler couldn’t make weight and Darrington was forced to forfeit.
“If he had made weight we would have tied 36-36 last time,” Monteith said.
Concrete was missing injured standout wrestler Chris Paxton and forfeited at 140-pounds.
The win improved Darrington’s record to 5-1 in league and 10-2 overall.

North Sound Christian 54, Lopez Island 52: At Lopez Island, Tanner Mahler scored 21 points and hit four 3-pointers and North Sound Christian hit six 3-pointers in the third quarter before hanging on to take a Northwest 1B victory. North Sound secured a district invitation with the win. Alex Buffum led Lopez Island with 15 points.

North Sound Christian 48, Lopez Island 27: At Lopez Island, junior guard Melissa Castor hit eight 3-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds and scored 32 of North Sound Christian’s 48 points to lead her team to a Northwest 1B victory. Brooke Schober had eight points and three steals to lead Lopez Island, and freshman Marina Steinbrueck chipped in nine rebounds in the loss.
