With news coming out earlier today that the Seahawks are about to sign Pro Bowl TE Zach Miller, one of the first questions is what that means to three-year starter John Carlson. According to Pete Carroll, Miller and Carlson can coexist in Seattle’s offense.
“Absolutely,” Carroll said, adding, “Anybody who thinks otherwise doesn’t get it.”
For his part, Carlson handled the news well even though, at the very least, the addition of Miller will mean less passes thrown his way this season.
“Zach is very accomplished,” he said. “Obviously he was a Pro Bowler last year and he’s done a lot in four years. It’s great that he is coming to the team and is going to add another weapon to the offense.”
“It’s going to be competitive at the tight end position and that’s the way coach runs things, the way the NFL is. I’m happy he is going to be here, I think he’s make the team better and I look forward to seeing what we can do with two tight end packages and see what we can do offensively. We have to perform on the field. I have to prove that I deserve to be out there as are the other guys at our position. We are all trying to fight for a spot, for a role. It’s like that every year. It doesn’t matter who they bring in. It’s always competitive and you always have to earn you spot. That’s kind of how it its”.
Asked if he is worried the Seahawks could look to trade him now that Miller is here, Carlson said, “Honestly, things that are out of my control I can’t worry about. If they want to trade me, they want to trade me, and I can’t do anything about that. All I can do is work as hard as I can on the football field and in the meeting room, and study my playbook at home to be as prepared as I can be, be as good a player as I can be. Whatever happens, it’s out of my control. I can’t worry.”
Other notes
Chris Henry has not been at practice the past two days, and Carroll confirmed that running back is no longer with the team.
DE Chris Clemons sat out with an infection in his ankle, which he had surgery on in the offseason. Carroll said Clemons could have gone, but was held out as a precaution.
