EDMONDS — The season is relatively young, but on Wednesday night Edmonds-Woodway gave Kamiak a stern reminder why it’s tied for first place in the Wesco South.
It has a lot to do with staying cool in the face of adversity.
Sophomore forward Angela Woods scored 20 points, senior guard Jennifer Singh added 17, and the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors rallied from a 10-point, first-quarter deficit to run away with an 81-60 Wesco South victory at Edmonds-Woodway High School.
“Every player deserves a game ball tonight,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Wayne Edwards said. “The girls didnt care (about trailing early). They kept playing their game — they knew it was going to come together.
Kamiak “tired us out at first, and then we got them back,” added Singh, who connected on four 3-pointers for the game.
E-W, tied with Meadowdale for first place in the Wesco South entering Wednesday’s game, improved to 5-0 in league play. Kamiak fell to 3-2 in league.
Trailing 24-14 after the first quarter, Edmonds-Woodway kept its cool and outscored Kamiak by 31 points the rest of the way.
E-W’s Woods got things started by hitting a 3-pointer to open the second quarter, and the Warriors used a 9-0 run to erase Kamiak’s lead.
Woods scored 11 of her game-high 20 points in the second quarter.
“We didn’t do anything different,” Edwards said of the huge momentum shift from the first to the second quarter. “They had their run, then we had ours. We went at our own pace and at our own tempo.
Edmonds-Woodway put the game away with a devastating third quarter, outscoring Kamiak 20-6 off a variety of fastbreak layups and 3-pointers. Singh scored nine points, including one banked 3-pointer, in the third to lead Edmonds-Woodway’s run.
“They’re a good team and they took advantage of our mistakes,” said a dispirited Jody Schauer, Kamiak’s head coach. “We get a lead and then we relax.”
Edwards said the well-rounded effort his team put forth made it “hard to single out anyone. Jennifer Singh played her best game of the year offensively and defensively, Abby Butler played hungry. She must have had a steak before the game.”
For one quarter though, it looked like Edmonds-Woodway would not be able to stay undefeated in league play. A lot of that had to do with Kamiak senior standout Kelsey Patrick.
Patrick scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out two assists in slightly less than 12 minutes of play while leading the Knights to a 24-14 advantage after the first quarter.
Patrick made a 3-pointer for the first points of the game, and her defensive rebound set up a 3-pointer by Kamiak junior guard Kariah Kussman to hand the Knights an early 6-0 advantage.
“Kelsey Patrick — she’s awesome,” Edwards said. “I’ve admired her as an athlete (for a long time).”
Patrick finished with a team-high 19 points and three 3-pointers. Kussman chipped in 15 points for the Knights, 12 on 3-pointers.
But Kamiak appeared to tire as the game went on, and Patrick spent a large part of the third quarter resting on the bench.
“We have four or five shooters that can fill it up if we pass to the open person,” Singh added of her team’s back-breaking run in the second and third quarters.
