Kamiak High School’s Seo Hee Moon could have been a nervous freshman when she stepped to the first tee last May for the State Class 4A girls golf championship at Burlington’s Avalon Golf Club.
After all, she was going up against the best high school golfers in Washington, and many of them had more experience than her in tournament golf — or at least high school tournament golf.
But Moon was unfazed by any of that. And in a sport that demands a steady hand, the youngster — she was 15 at the time — had the steadiest of all on her way to a two-round total of 137 and a 12-shot victory for the 2007 state title.
She had started the second of two rounds with a five stroke lead, and then promptly stretched out her margin with a final-round 70. One rival pulled within four shots, but Moon posted five birdies over the final nine holes to win convincingly.
“I didn’t lose my focus, and just played my game,” she said at the time.
Moon, one of four finalists for The Herald’s Woman of the Year in Sports award, not only won individual honors in decisive fashion, but she also helped Kamiak to the team trophy. The Knights ran away from the field by putting up a team state record of 174 team points, easily outdistancing runnerup Redmond, which had 94.
Though Moon was playing just her first season of high school golf, she “has played in so many (junior golf) tournaments that her experience really paid off,” Kamiak coach Bud Davis said at the time.
Moon will try to make it two in a row in 2008 as a veteran sophomore. And who’s to say about 2009 and 2010?
