Friday night’s Prep Roundup

MARYSVILLE — One by one Spencer Elwell swatted away shots and quarter by quarter the Marysville-Pilchuck defense continued to stifle the Mount Vernon offense.

Elwell had just two points but the 6-foot-8 senior grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked 11 Bulldog shots leading the Tomahawks to a 45-33 non-conference boys basketball win over Mount Vernon Friday night at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

After Mount Vernon jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter lead, Marysville-Pilchuck (4-3 overall) held the Bulldogs under double-figures in the last three quarters of the game.

“We played good defense,” Tomahawks head coach Barry Gould said.

Forward Nick Forsythe led a balanced scoring attack, scoring 10 points for the Tomahawks. Tyler Holm scored nine and Jordan Godsey added eight points off the bench.

“Jordan stepped up and did all the little things. He took a charge and hit a big 3-pointer,” Gould said.

The win broke a two-game skid for the Tomahawks, who finished a tough non-conference schedule and begin conference play Tuesday against Stanwood.
