Two Glacier Peak runners posted standout times in the 800 meters Saturday at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, an annual star-studded meet near Los Angeles that draws some of the nation’s top prep track and field athletes.
Glacier Peak senior Nicholas Mullineux Perrault placed sixth in the boys 800 meters open race with a time of 1 minute, 55.59 seconds. That ranks as the fourth-fastest time for a Washington runner this season regardless of classification, and ranks 73rd in the nation among high school boys.
Glacier Peak senior Elena Willems placed eighth in the girls open 800, finishing in 2:15.59. That ranks third among Washington runners this season regardless of classification and 77th in the nation among high school girls.
“Last week officially marked the halfway point for our season, so running that fast (this) early is impressive,” Glacier Peak coach Loren Childers said of both runners.
Mullineux Perrault and Willems both overcame rough starts.
“Nick got out in dead-last place, and that’s abnormal for him,” Childers said. “He’s usually in that lead pack and pushing the pace. But then that last 300 (meters), he almost caught the entire field. He came up a little bit short at the end, but ran a gutsy race.
“Elena got tripped up a little bit early,” he added. “She kind of stumbled, but then … started really moving up. A little unconventional for her as well, but solid performances.”
