Lake Stevens’ Eason is AP state player of the year

Lake Stevens High School football standout Jacob Eason was named the state Player of the Year on Wednesday by the Associated Press.

Eason also was picked as the Class 4A Player of the Year and as the first-team quarterback on AP’s Class 4A all-state team. Joining Eason on the 4A first team were his go-to target, senior tight end Riley Krenz, and Cascade offensive lineman Josh Watson.

Several of Eason’s teammates received honorable mention, including Andrew Grimes (running back), Hunter Eckstrom (wide receiver), Michael Nelson (defensive line) and Sam Burke (linebacker).

Archbishop Murphy star Anfernee Gurley was a 2A first-team pick as an all-purpose player. He was joined on the first team by Archbishop Murphy kicker Ryan Henderson. Wildcats sophomore linebacker Ben Hines received honorable mention, as did Lakewood offensive lineman Jordan Jira.

In 3A, the Herald’s Defensive Player of the Year, Glacier Peak linebacker Iain Black, received honorable mention.

Cascade Conference defensive MVP Cooper Wright, a linebacker from King’s, received honorable mention in the 1A classification, and Tulalip Heritage’s Robert Miles Jr. earned honorable mention at wide receiver on the 1B all-state team.
