The Lakewood softball team is headed to state for just the second time in school history and the first time since 2001.
The Cougars (17-6) punched their ticket with back-to-back 2A Northwest District tournament victories last Wednesday. Lakewood earned a 9-6 nine-inning win over Lynden in the quarterfinals, then beat Cedarcrest 7-4 in the semifinals to secure a trip to Selah for the 2A state tournament. The Cougars placed second in district after a 6-2 loss to top-seeded Sehome in Friday’s title game.
South Whidbey (12-11) advanced to state for the third time in four years after winning back-to-back 1A Northwest District tournament elimination games Saturday. The Falcons routed Cedar Park Christian 15-0 and beat Nooksack Valley 8-1 to punch their ticket to Richland for the 1A state tournament.
