We’re about 45 minutes away from tipoff and Lorenzo Romar has changed his lineup, putting Quincy Pondexter back in the lineup in place of Phil Nelson. Spencer Hawes will still be coming off the bench as Artem Wallace will start at center.
A California official said that Bears’ point guard Ayinde Ubaka has been suffering from a stomach flu lately, going so far as to going to the hospital for fluids. Given that Ubaka is probably the second best player on the team, that could help the Huskies.
Washington has two big keys for this game. One is it has to rebound. Cal is one of only two teams to out-rebound the Huskies this season and the Bears had 18 second-chance points in the first game, a factor Romar pointed out as evidence that his team was simply outworked.
Second, Washington must account for Cal star freshman Ryan Anderson, who can score from just about anywhere. The Huskies can’t let Anderson get hot from the outside, and closing down on shooters has been an issue for Washington.
More than anything, though, Washington needs a fast start and a convincing win heading into a big game Sunday against a Stanford team that is better than Cal.
