The Monroe boys swimming and diving team is trying to raise its profile in the school and community as well as Wesco. Bearcats coach Haley Graham said she believes her team is making progress toward that goal.
“Our team is definitely growing,” she said. “We’re getting our name out now. We’re not a powerhouse program like some other big schools, but we have a more well-rounded team in terms of talent (than in the past). We’ve had a few good meets so far, and overall our times are faster.”
Benson Boone, who became the first diver in the history of the program last year as a freshman, has a good chance to qualify for the 4A state meet, Graham said. She also has high hopes for senior swimmer Carson Moore.
“Benson has come a long way in a short time period,” Graham said. “He’s fearless in a lot of ways, and he’s found his niche on the diving board. He’s more mature this year, he’s coachable and he wants (success). Carson was a distance swimmer, but now he’s trying to convert to the sprint style. At this point he’s going for the school record in the 50-yard freestyle.”
