PREP BOYS BASKETBALL RUNDUP: Lake Stevens has monster half

LAKE STEVENS — Scoring 55 points at the end of a game is a decent standard.

But scoring 55 in the first half definitely deserves a wow factor.

With Lake Stevens holding a 55-28 lead at halftime led by the 19 from Aaron Mah, the Vikings kept their perfect Wesco North record intact with a 87-67 win over Arlington Friday night in a “Coaches versus Cancer” special at a full-capacity Lake Stevens High School gym.

The Vikings took advantage of 16 first-half Arlington turnovers — due in large part to Arlington missing point guard Zach Cooper — and knocked down nine 3-pointers to gain the big lead.

Shane Kaska had a prolific game with 19 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals for Lake Stevens.

“Its definitely a group that’s capable of such a hot start,” Lake Stevens head coach Mark Hein said of his Vikings. “Our intensity in the first half was great, Jarett Hanson got the backcourt pressure started, he was a big key for us to get it going early.”

And the target on the back of Lake Stevens boys basketball may have gotten just a bit bigger.

“These guys know we can’t look by anybody in our league,” Hein said. “The challenge has been season long to push to our best performance, that’s what we have to continue to do.”
