Prep football: Lake Stevens 23, Kamiak 9

EVERETT — It wasn’t always pretty, but Lake Stevens got the job done.

The Vikings survived five turnovers, 10 penalties for 90 yards and weathered a late Kamiak touchdown to defeat the Knights 23-9 in a non-conference football game Friday at Goddard Stadium.

Lake Stevens (2-0 overall) scored in every quarter, beginning with a 33-yard pass from junior quarterback Jake Nelson to Brady Pahukoa.

Nelson completed 11 of 23 passes for 225 yards — 164 of which came in the first half — and a touchdown. Nelson also contributed 63 rushing yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run.

Lake Stevens’ second scoring drive lasted all of three plays, Nelson completed a 57-yard bomb to Pahukoa, to set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Duke Dolphin. Pahukoa finished with five receptions for 122 yards.

Dolphin helped the Vikings establish their running game, carrying the ball 16 times for 69 yards. The Vikings totaled 168 yards on the ground.

Lake Stevens’ added two points in the third quarter when Kamiak snapped the ball over punter Thomas Fossedal’s head and out of the end zone for a safety.

In the second half, Lake Stevens fumbled the ball away on two consecutive drives. With 6:07 remaining in the game, Kamiak capitalized on the latter turnover to finally find the end zone when Steve Bradshaw caught a 10-yard pass from Anthony Berg.

The Knights fought turnovers too. On the drive before Kamiak’s touchdown, Berg threw an interception on the 3-yard line after an 80-yard march down the field.

Lake Stevens’ final turnover was a fumble with four minutes to play on Kamiak’s 28-yard line. Kamiak, however, couldn’t capitalize.

The Vikings took over on downs and Nelson ran the ball in for a score to seal the victory.

Berg completed 18 of 38 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown, but had four interceptions. Bradshaw led the Kamiak receivers with nine catches for 92 yards.
