PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Marysville-Pilchuck rolls over Stanwood, 71-46

MARYSVILLE — A balanced attack helped keep Marysville-Pilchuck on top of the Western Conference North Division girls basketball standings with a 71-46 win over Stanwood Tuesday night at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Morgan Martinis led five double-figure scorers with a game-high 15 points for the Tomahawks (6-0 league, 8-2 overall).

“We were completely balanced, fully,” said seventh-year Marysville-Pilchuck head coach Julie Martin.

Martinis added five assists as M-P broke down Stanwood’s defense for 44 second-half points.

“She (Martinis) creates a lot of things and also doesn’t stand to get the ball,” Martin said of Martinis, a 5-foot-6 junior guard. “… She’s a very selfless player.”

Martin also highlighted the efforts of Becca Lentz (12 points) and 6-foot sophomore post Hannon Watson (12 points).

“(Lentz) hit a couple 3s for us that turned the momentum around for us,” Martin said, adding that she thought Watson’s 12 points was a season high.

Emily Enberg helped ignite the Tomahawks in the third quarter by scoring 11 of her 13 points.

Marysville-Pilchuck struggled to pull away in the first half, ahead just 27-24 at halftime, but the Tomahawks held Stanwood (2-3, 4-5) to 22 points in the second half.

“Stanwood was great defensively, they just put a lot of pressure on us and made us rush our offense a little bit,” Martin said.

Samantha Kelleigh led Stanwood with 14 points and Brenda Bingham added 10.

Enberg, Watson and Dacia Heckendorf finished with seven rebounds apiece for Marysville-Pilchuck.

The Tomahawks face the Monroe Bearcats on Thursday night in a match-up of the two top teams in the Wesco North.
