PREP NOTEBOOK: Glacier Peak girls cross country team ranked nationally

Can anyone catch these Grizzlies?

Just like last year, Glacier Peak High School’s girls cross country team should be among the best in the state, and even one of the best squads in the country. Led by 2009 Class 3A individual state cross country champion Amy-Eloise Neale, the Grizzlies of Snohomish are No. 19 in America in Marc Bloom’s 2010 Pre-Season Super 25 rankings. Check out the complete rankings at http://tinyurl.com/23xhgck.

Glacier Peak — coached by Dan Parker — is ranked No. 2 in the Northwest region. Jesuit (Portland, Ore.) is No. 1.

Neale, a Glacier Peak sophomore, won the 3A state cross country meet in Pasco as a freshman and helped the Grizzlies place second in the team standings.

Practice started Monday for prep girls and boys cross country and all other fall-season sports (except football, which began last week).

Arlington lineman injured

Arlington High senior Brady Quinton, a standout lineman, will miss about half of the 2010 season because of a left-knee injury, Arlington coach Greg Dailer said Monday. Projected as a two-way starter, Quinton suffered a torn meniscus two weeks ago while playing an ultimate Frisbee-style football game with teammates. Last year Quinton was an All-Wesco North second team offensive lineman.

“He was our best lineman offensively and really solid on the defensive line. He’s our strongest player,” Dailer said of the 240-pound, 6-foot-3 Quinton, who had surgery on his knee Monday.

“We may get him back the second half of the season,” said Dailer.

Fewer playing football

Archbishop Murphy High football coach Dave Ward said Monday he was happy with the effort and enthusiasm during the Wildcats’ initial practices, which included four grueling two-a-day sessions. Ward has high hopes this season for Murphy, which returns many key players from its 2009 squad that reached the 2A state semifinals. However, Ward is concerned about the program’s decrease in freshmen. As of Monday, just 15 freshmen had turned out, compared to 30 last year. Enrollment is down at the school, which will affect all sports, Ward said.
