State cross country roundup: Cascade runner wins ambulatory boys title

The Arlington boys and girls deliver top-5 finishes, Kamiak boys place 5th behind 1-2 punch and Stanwood sophomore takes 5th in 3A girls.

PASCO — Cascade sophomore Jacob Hopkins delivered a first-place finish to claim his second consecutive state title in the boys ambulatory race at the state cross country championships Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course.

Hopkins set a new record on the 2.1-mile course with a time of 13 minutes, 21.8 seconds. The mark bested the previous course record set by Hopkins last year. He finished nearly 20 seconds in front of his nearest competitor.

Arlington freshman Ramon Little placed third at 13:58.

Arlington boys, girls secure top-5 team trophies

The Arlington boys and girls squads added to their strong pedigree with top-five team finishes in their respective Class 3A state championship races.

The boys placed in area-best fourth behind a pair of runners in the top 20 and three more in the top 70. Junior Lucas Spurling placed 17th and finished the 5,000-meter course in 16:12.3. Junior Noah Bumgardner was right behind in 18th at 16:13. Junior Grady Fournier took 31st at 16:26.6, while senior Andrew Schmitz and junior Beau Pearson rounded out the scoring with 51st- and 69th-place finishes, respectively.

The girls took fifth and were only one point behind fourth-place Gig Harbor. Junior Brooke Henkin placed 23rd at 19:19.4 and freshman Anabelle Klein followed in 24th place at 19:20.7. Senior Reda Long placed 54th, sophomore Raelyn Oetzel 61st and sophomore Amelia Potong 89th to cap the scoring for the Eagles.

Kamiak duo leads 5th-place finish

Kamiak senior Will Lesyna and sophomore Colin Wear were among the top one-two punches in Pasco and led the Knights to a fifth-place team finish in 4A.

Lesyna placed fourth with a 15:49.5 pace and Wear followed in fifth at 15:53.1. Junior Zachary Altmyer took 49th, senior Reece Raaum 89th and junior Cole Henriksen 94th to round of the scoring for Kamiak.

Stanwood, Snohomish runners place in 3A girls top 10

Stanwood sophomore Mary Andelin followed her district title last week with a fifth-place finish in the 3A championship race. Andelin finished the course in 18:25.2.

Snohomish senior Paige Gerrard joined Andelin in the top 10 with an eighth-place finish at 18:39. It was the third top-10 finish of Gerrard’s career. She placed sixth as a sophomore and fourth as a junior.

Jackson junior takes 6th in 4A girls

Jackson’s Selena Bangerter placed sixth in the 4A girls championship race. The junior finished the course in 18:37.7.

Other locals in top 20

King’s freshman Lauren Belden placed fourth in 1A girls at 19:50.7 and junior Sophia Inglin ninth at 19:24.1. The Knights tied for second as a team.

King’s junior Staser Simpson finished 10th in 1A boys at 16:32.4.

Jackson junior Ethan Holmes placed 12th in 4A boys at 16:10.7.

Cedarcrest sophomore Lydia Swenson finished 12th in 2A girls at 19:30.1.

Shorewood junior Otto Erhart led a fifth-place team finish for Shorewood by placing 15th in 3A boys at 16:11.6.
