State volleyball roundup: Monroe loses in quarterfinals

The Monroe Bearcats suffered their first loss of the season Friday, falling to Battle Ground 3-1 late Friday night at the Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament in Kennewick.

The set scores were 23-25, 25-13, 25-10 and 25-17.

The Bearcats (18-1) opend the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Graham-Kapowsin. Play backed up during the day and the Monroe-Battle Ground match, originally scheduled for 8:15 p.m., started more than 90 minutes late.

The other Wesco 4A team in the tournament — Jackson — lost its first-round match to Bellarmine Prep 3-1, but rebounded to beat University 3-0 in a loser-out contest. The Timberwolves play Central Valley at 11 a.m. Saturday in a loser-out contest.

In the 3A tournament, also in Kennewick, Stanwood was eliminated in two matches. The Spartans lost to Bishop Blanchet 3-2, then fell to University 3-2 in a loser-out contest.

The Wesco 3A champion, Shorewood, reached the semifinals by beating Auburn Mountainview and Mercer Island, each by the score of 3-1. The Thunderbirds (22-0) face Columbia River at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the winner earning a spot in the state-title match.

At the Class 2A Tournament in Lacey, Archbishop Murphy won its first-round match 3-1 over Othello, then was knocked into the consolation bracket with a 3-1 loss to Ridgefield. The Wildcats play North Kitsap at 11 a.m. Saturday in a loser-out contest.

In the 1A Tournament in Yakima, King’s and Cedar-Park Christian-Bothell both reached the quarterfinals with first-round wins. King’s then losts its quarterfinal match to Kalama 3-2, while CPC-Bothell advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Charles Wright.
