The Herald’s 2022 All-Area high school girls soccer teams

A look at the top prep girls soccer players in the area this fall.

Editor’s note: The Player of the Year and All-Area teams were chosen by The Herald sports staff based on coach recommendations, season statistics and first-hand observations.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Sara Rodgers, sr., F, Snohomish

COACH OF THE YEAR

Mindy Dalziel, Shorecrest

Despite graduating the majority of her starting lineup from last year, Dalziel guided the Scots to the 3A state semifinals and a fourth-place state finish. Shorecrest captured the Wesco 3A/2A title and the 3A District 1 Tournament crown en route to an 18-3-1 finish, while piling up a 62-9 goal differential.

FIRST TEAM

Sara Rodgers, sr., F, Snohomish

The University of Idaho commit led the area in scoring for the second consecutive season, totaling 32 goals and 10 assists this fall after recording 31 goals and five assists last year. She scored or assisted 61% of the Panthers’ goals this season, while posting six hat tricks and 10 multi-goal performances. She led Snohomish to a 12-8 record and a Class 3A state tournament appearance.

Ryann Reynolds, sr., F, Glacier Peak

The University of Oregon signee totaled 17 goals and four assists while leading the Grizzlies to the Wesco 4A title and an 8-4-2 record. She was named the Wesco 4A player of the year.

Natalie Cardin, jr., F, Mountlake Terrace

Cardin recorded 17 goals and eight assists while helping lead the Hawks to a 12-4-4 record and the program’s first state berth since 1990. She helped spearhead a massive turnaround that took Mountlake Terrace from back-to-back one-win seasons in 2018 and 2019 to a 3A state round-of-16 appearance this fall.

Megan Hurley, sr., F, Monroe

Hurley totaled 15 goals and two assists while leading the Bearcats to an 11-9 record and a 3A state tournament appearance. It was Monroe’s first state trip since 2009.

Cameron Bourne, sr., MF, Archbishop Murphy

The University of Oregon commit recorded 13 goals and eight assists while helping lead the Wildcats to a 14-4-1 record and a second-place finish in Wesco 3A/2A. She was named the Wesco 3A/2A player of the year.

SJ Hammer, sr., MF, Snohomish

Hammer totaled 16 goals and six assists while helping lead the Panthers to a 12-8 record and a 3A state tournament appearance.

Izzy Thoma, sr., MF, Glacier Peak

The University of Idaho signee recorded four goals and four assists, while also helping key a defense that allowed 1.9 goals per match against a tough schedule. She helped lead the Grizzlies to the Wesco 4A title and an 8-4-2 record.

Ava Jensen, sr., MF, Shorecrest

Jensen totaled 14 goals and six assists. She helped lead the Scots to an 18-3-1 record, the Wesco 3A/2A title, the 3A District 1 Tournament crown and the 3A state semifinals.

Claire Esping, sr., D, Archbishop Murphy

Esping helped anchor a defense that allowed just 0.6 goals per match. She also recorded two goals and two assists. She helped lead the Wildcats to a 14-4-1 record and a second-place finish in Wesco 3A/2A.

Brie Cote, sr., D, Archbishop Murphy

Cote totaled three goals and eight assists as a wing back, while also helping anchor a defense that allowed just 0.6 goals per match. She helped lead the Wildcats to a 14-4-1 record and a second-place finish in Wesco 3A/2A.

Giulia Menning, sr., D, Shorecrest

Menning helped anchor a defense that allowed just 0.4 goals per match. She also scored a goal and added four assists. She helped lead the Scots to an 18-3-1 record, the Wesco 3A/2A title, the 3A District 1 Tournament crown and the 3A state semifinals.

Jenna Edelbrock, sr., D, Snohomish

Edelbrock totaled three goals and four assists, while anchoring a defense that allowed 1.2 goals per match. The four-year starter helped lead the Panthers to a 12-8 record and a 3A state tournament appearance.

Sierra Sonko, sr., GK, Mountlake Terrace

The Sacramento State commit posted seven shutouts and made 90 saves while helping lead the Hawks to a 12-4-4 record and the program’s first berth since 1990. With Sonko protecting the net, Mountlake Terrace allowed just 0.7 goals per match. The standout goalkeeper helped spearhead a massive turnaround that took the Hawks from back-to-back one-win seasons in 2018 and 2019 to a 3A state round-of-16 appearance this fall.

SECOND TEAM

Diana Tuilevuka, fr., F, Shorewood

Tuilevuka helped spearhead a high-scoring Shorewood attack that averaged 3.1 goals per match. She helped lead the Stormrays to a 14-3-2 record and the 3A state quarterfinals.

Nora Patterson, sr., F, Shorecrest

Patterson totaled 11 goals and six assists. She helped lead the Scots to an 18-3-1 record, the Wesco 3A/2A title, the 3A District 1 Tournament crown and the 3A state semifinals.

Sadie Schaefer, soph., F, Cedarcrest

Schaefer recorded 13 goals and eight assists while leading the Red Wolves to an 11-5-1 record.

Mariyah McCrae, sr., F, Kamiak

McCrae totaled six goals and six assists while helping lead the Knights to a 9-8 record.

Amelia Severn, jr., MF, Shorewood

Severn helped spearhead a high-scoring Shorewood attack that averaged 3.1 goals per match. She helped lead the Stormrays to a 14-3-2 record and the 3A state quarterfinals.

Tayvi Khann, jr., MF, Shorecrest

Khann recorded nine goals and eight assists, including a hat trick in the Scots’ state quarterfinal win over Peninsula. She helped lead Shorecrest to an 18-3-1 record, the Wesco 3A/2A title, the 3A District 1 Tournament crown and the 3A state semifinals.

Carly Bartlow, sr., MF, Arlington

Bartlow totaled 10 goals and seven assists, while also playing a key defensive role in the midfield. She led the Eagles to a 9-7-2 record.

Zoe Hopkins, jr., MF, Lake Stevens

After moving from striker to midfield due to a slew of Lake Stevens injuries, Hopkins led the Vikings’ attack with approximately 10 goals.

Cary Tanaka, sr., D, Shorewood

Tanaka anchored a defense that allowed just 0.9 goals per match. She helped lead the Stormrays to a 14-3-2 record and the 3A state quarterfinals.

Audrey Burgmeier, sr., D, Glacier Peak

After one of her teammates suffered a season-ending injury, Burgmeier moved from outside back to center back and anchored a defense that allowed 1.9 goals per match against a tough schedule. She helped lead the Grizzlies to the Wesco 4A title and an 8-4-2 record.

Darci Dalziel, jr., D, Shorecrest

Dalziel helped anchor a defense that allowed just 0.4 goals per match. She also scored a goal and added two assists. She helped lead the Scots to an 18-3-1 record, the Wesco 3A/2A title, the 3A District 1 Tournament crown and the 3A state semifinals.

Maggie Aydelott, sr., D, Jackson

Aydelott anchored a defense that allowed 1.8 goals per match against a tough schedule.

Tatiana Zahajko, jr., GK, Shorecrest

Zahajko posted 15 shutouts, including five clean sheets in the postseason. She was a major reason why the Scots allowed just 0.4 goals per match. She helped lead Shorecrest to an 18-3-1 record, the Wesco 3A/2A title, the 3A District 1 Tournament crown and the 3A state semifinals.
