The last time I saw Parker Burns, a 2007 Everett High School graduate, he was honored at the Walsh-Platt Athletic Scholarship Banquet, an annual event that gives the community a chance to celebrate the Everett School District’s elite student-athletes.
These days Burns spends most of his time clear across the country at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. Burns is on Campbell’s wrestling team and he is having a heck of a season.
This past Saturday Burns won the individual championship in the 197-pound weight class at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Millersville, Pa. Burns, a junior, qualified for the 2010 NCAA National Wrestling Championships March 18-20 in Omaha, Neb. He is the first Campbell wrestler to advance to the national championships since 2002.
Burns has come a long way since his days (three years, actually) of being a junior-varsity wrestler at Everett High. He later won an individual state title for the Seagulls in 2007.
