Two slashed in Everett, one by machete

UPDATE: Everett police announced this development Thursday evening:

“At approximately 8:30 p.m., Yonathan A. Carreno Duarte turned himself in to the police. He will be questioned by detectives then booked into the Snohomish County Jail. There is no additional information at this time.”

UPDATE: Everett police now say they are looking for a Lynnwood man in connection with a knife attack Wednesday evening that left a woman bleeding from her neck.

Officers want to talk with Yonathan A. Carreno Duarte, 28, about the attack, Everett police officer Aaron Snell said. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to call 911.

A public information bulletin about the case, including Carreno Duarte’s photograph, is attached. He is the injured woman’s ex boyfriend.

Snell said a knife was found near the attack and has been secured as evidence. He also said police were mistaken about the woman’s age. She’s actually 20.

Original story:

EVERETT – Two people were seriously injured in Everett on Wednesday night when they were slashed on the face and neck in separate incidents.

The first violence occurred about 7:30 p.m., and ended with a 20-year-old man with a cut on the face from a machete.

About two hours later, a 31-year-old woman was cut several times along her neck with some sort of edged weapon after she agreed to meet an ex-boyfriend to talk about domestic issues, Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.

The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, but they were serious enough that both of the wounded required care at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center.

Officers were told the machete slashing occurred after a neighbor, 47, tried to break up a fight between brothers at an apartment in the 3200 block of 18th Street. The brothers turned on the man, and one reportedly began attacking with a baseball bat. The neighbor used a machete to cut one of the brothers on the face, Snell said.

The neighbor said he was acting in self defense. Snell didn’t immediately know whether charges were likely.

The attack on the woman triggered a police search after people reported her screaming outside a store in the 7600 block of Evergreen Way. Police converged on the area, but the man who cut her evaded arrest Wednesday night.
