The three Edmonds City Council members whose terms expire this year all had filed to run in the coming election, as online and in-person filing opened Monday.
Council members Adrienne Fraley-Monillas, Kristiana Johnson and Strom Peterson all had filed, either online or in person at the Snohomish County auditor’s office in Everett, or by mail since April 29.
All three will face familiar opponents.
Fraley-Monillas has a challenge from the man she replaced on the council four years ago, Ron Wambolt. Fraley-Monillas defeated Wambolt and now Councilwoman Lora Petso in a tight 2009 primary. Petso defeated Wambolt in a hand recount for the right to face Fraley-Monillas in the general election. Fraley-Monillas went on to defeat Petso in the general election by a 54 percent to 45 percent margin. Petso joined the council by appointment in 2010 and won a full term in 2011. Since leaving the council, Wambolt twice has applied unsuccessfully for council vacancies.
Peterson faces a challenge from Al Rutlege, who lost to Peterson and now-Councilwoman Diane Buckshnis in the 2009 primary, Peterson defeated Buckshnis in the general election, Buckshnis won appointment to the council in 2010 and won a full term in 2011. Rutlege also lost council elections in 2007 and 2011 and also has lost several bids for council appointments.
Johnson faces an expected challenge from Randy Hayden, who was an unsuccessful applicant when Johnson won appointment to the council in 2012. Hayden was an unsuccessful Republican candidate against Democratic state Rep. Cindy Ryu in 2012.
Unless three or more candidates file for any position, that position will appear only on the November ballot. Positions with three or more candidates will appear on the August primary ballot, which then would narrow the field to two for the general election.
Filing continues through Friday at 4 p.m.
