While Berlex is building the first major drug factory in Washington state, some other local biotechnology firms are planning smaller manufacturing facilities in Snohomish County.
Xcyte Therapies Inc. of Seattle has begun construction on a new laboratory in Bothell that will produce special cancer-fighting cells. The $4 million facility will create enough Xcellerated T Cells, the company’s most advanced product, for clinical trials.
Other biotech firms with products in clinical trials also do some of their manufacturing locally.
Bothell-based Nastech Pharmaceutical Co. makes a vitamin B12 supplement called Nascobal, on Long Island, N.Y., but has talked about moving that work to this area. Sales of that approved drug, which actually is owned by another company, have totaled less than $10 million annually.
