2023 Genesis G90 sedan exudes luxury while repelling smoke

The marque’s top model is fully redesigned this year with dramatic styling and a new engine selection.

The primo model in the Genesis lineup, the G90 sedan, is entirely redesigned for 2023. Dramatic styling revisions inside and out, technology upgrades, a new engine selection, and pampering luxury additions are all in the mix.

G90’s wide beam and an overall length that goes on forever gives the car an expansive cabin where large adults can travel in ultimate automotive comfort. The car’s smooth suspension could only be surpassed by a cradle.

There are two versions of the 2023 G90: the 3.5T AWD starting at $89,495, and the 3.5T E-Supercharger AWD starting at $99,795. The $1,095 destination charge is included in these prices.

The 3.5T AWD has five-passenger seating and a 375-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine.

Seating for four, with rear bucket seats, is the setup inside the E-Supercharger model. It has a 409-horsepower version of the V6, made possible by an electric supercharger to boost power, effectively a mild hybrid system.

An eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard on both models.

EPA fuel economy ratings are 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for the twin-turbo V6. The V6 with electric supercharger gets 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. As you might guess, premium gasoline is required.

The best way to encapsulate the superabundance of G90’s standard features is to instead just name the only thing it lacks: wireless versions of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

I drove the G90 e-Supercharger model. It gilds the lily by having heat, ventilation, massage and power adjustability for the back seats as well as the front.

G90 is the first Genesis to have a fragrance system that can be activated to disperse “pleasing scents” throughout the passenger cabin. There are three different aromas and their names are amusingly vague: The Driver’s Awakening, The Great Outdoors, and My Favorite Place.

I didn’t try out the fragrance system because I’m not a fan of unnatural fragrances in the first place, but I was also in the G90 last week when Seattle was in first place for the worst air quality IN THE WORLD and Snohomish County’s air was toxic with wildfire smoke. If the fragrance system’s fragrance didn’t strike me as a pleasing scent, the first instinct would be to put down all the windows, and well…

G90 does have an advanced air filtration system that can legitimately be called health-protective. Maybe even life-saving. Most cars have air filtration systems but if there’s something really noxious in the surrounding air, a hint of it will make its way into the car’s interior. Not so with the G90. There was no trace of smoke inside the test car ever, and I was compulsively sniff-testing it like a bloodhound.

G90’s Virtual Venues Live is a 3D surround sound function that recreates the acoustics of actual concert venues for certain types of music. The sound is delivered by an outstanding 26-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Mood Curator is the name I love for an all-new feature added to the Genesis lineup for the first time in the 2023 G90. It integrates laid-back features like ambient lighting, audio, the fragrance system, seat massage, and electric sunshades. There are four different mood modes and they can be customized.
